Terry Littlewood, chairman of the Phoenix and Parkgate Junior Angling Club, said: “We are delighted that Tata have chosen to help us in this way.
“The club aims to promote angling as a healthy, interesting sport for people of every age and ability and this support from Tata Steel means that the club is in a much more secure position and can start planning ahead.
“It also enables us to accommodate more members, engaging even more young people in this great outdoor activity.”
Graham Cresswell, operations manager for Tata Steel and lifelong angler, said: “Angling has been shown in studies by Durham University and the Environment Agency to be an effective tool in improving the behaviour and outlook of youngsters.
“Our donation will go towards helping qualified coaches take groups of children, via local youth organisations, and give them tuition in basic coarse fishing.
“This will include teaching both the physical and mental aspects required, as well as social and behavioural skills.
“We hope that, with our support, the club can engage with even more youngsters, maximising the benefit to the local community.”
